Water Fountain Care and Maintenance
Water fountains are actually very easy to maintain, requiring very little care and maintenance. The main things to remember are regular
wiping to keep them clean, and maintaining a sufficient water level to prevent damage to the pump. Here are some tips for caring for
different types of water fountains.
Copper Fountains
Our copper water fountains are made with a clear coat finish that will preserve the original copper color for years with proper regular
care. This finish is powder coat enamel that is baked on to the surface of the copper to provide a barrier from the elements that would
otherwise cause the copper to oxidize and develop natural verdigris that causes the copper to turn green. To keep this finish working for
many years, it is recommended that you apply Turtle Wax or other quality hard shell wax every two or three months, and clean the copper
daily with good household furniture polish on a soft cloth.
Be careful to not get wax or polish in the water, as it may cause damage to the fountain pump. In some areas, minerals in the tap water
can cause white spots on areas of your fountain that can be easily prevented with regular use of Protec Stain Remover. One bottle of
Protec can keep a regular sized water fountain clean for up to one year. Protec also prevents damage to your fountain pump that is caused
by these same minerals in your water.
For copper water fountains that do not have the clear coat finish, daily wiping with household furniture polish on a soft cloth will keep
your fountain clean and slow the natural verdigris process.
Even clear coated copper will naturally oxidize over time, and you will eventually see a rose colored “blush” develop on areas of your
fountain, particularly in valleys or creases where moisture accumulates. This “blush” will tend to stay localized in these areas, will not
affect the operation of your fountain pump, and will actually add to the character and charm of your water fountain over time.
Stainless Steel Fountains
Stainless Steel is a virtually maintenance free material; smooth and non-porous, it is resistant to bacteria and other microorganisms, and
also highly resistant to corrosion. Fingerprints and other small stains can be removed with a damp sponge or microfiber cloth, and scale
deposits can be prevented with regular use of Protec Water Treatment. Avoid using abrasive products, such as steel wool or scouring
cleansers, as they can leave scratches on the surface. Disinfectant cleansers should be avoided, as they can cause damage to your fountain
pump.
Resin and Fiberglass Fountains
Resin and Fiberglass fountains are very durable, very low maintenance, very lightweight, and come in an infinite variety of styles. The
most important quality is that they are very easy to keep clean. Simply drain the water and wipe down your fountain with mild soap and
water every three to six months for years of beautiful, enchanting enjoyment. You can also check your local hardware store for a plastic
or resin polish that will help to hide and prevent scratches.
Maintaining Water Level
Maintaining the proper water level in your fountain is important for a number of reasons. First of all, the noise that the fountain
produces can be reduced by keeping the fountain full. Secondly, the fountain pump will not have to work as hard and therefore last much
longer, if the water level stays high. Keeping the water at an adequate level will require varying amounts depending on the size of the
fountain, the ambient temperature, and the relative humidity around the fountain. It is much better to check the level daily and add
water as needed than it is to fill the water fountain completely once it starts to run dry. Keep in mind that evaporation occurs at
widely varying rates in different climates, so there is now basic “rule of thumb” to tell you how much water will be required to keep
your fountain full.
Pump Maintenance
In order to maximize the life of your fountain pump, follow these simple tips:
- Keep the water level in the fountain as close to full as possible
- Keep the pump fully submerged in the water
- Keep the pump running – turning the pump on and off causes extra wear and tear
- Use a screen or filter over the intake of your pump
- If your pump stops working, unplug it from the wall, remove the cover, and check for debris caught in the impeller
